Russian President Vladimir Putin, currently on a two-day visit to India, began his Friday engagements with a solemn tribute at Rajghat, where he signed the visitors’ book and wrote a reflective note on Mahatma Gandhi. Putin described Mahatma Gandhi as the founder of modern independent India, a humanist, and a great freedom fighter. Putin wrote, “Mahatma Gandhi made an invaluable contribution to the cause of peace on our planet through non-violence and truth… Mahatma Gandhi showed the path toward a new, fairer, multipolar world order that is now in the process of being formed.”
He added that Russia, like India, works to uphold equality, mutual respect and cooperation on the global stage.

The leaders are scheduled to meet business delegates later in the day, followed by a banquet hosted by President Murmu before Putin’s departure.
Putin’s visit comes as India simultaneously engages with the US on resolving tariff disputes linked to Russian oil imports — highlighting the complex balancing act New Delhi maintains in global diplomacy.
