Stray dogs guarding an abandoned newborn baby in Nabadwip before residents rescue the infant

Stray dogs form a protective circle around a newborn left in the cold, alerting residents and saving the infant’s life

In a heart-stirring incident from Nabadwip in West Bengal’s Nadia district, a newborn baby abandoned in the freezing early hours of dawn was miraculously saved — thanks to a pack of stray dogs who stood guard through the night. Newborn rescued by dogs, the story has moved the entire community. The dogs, often driven away by locals, became the infant’s unexpected protectors until residents discovered the baby and rushed for help.

Newborn Rescued by Dogs: What Happened

In a quiet railway workers’ colony, a newborn only hours old was found lying on the cold ground outside a bathroom—unclothed, unattended, and still bearing blood from birth.
But the infant was not entirely alone.

Eyewitnesses said a group of stray dogs had formed a ring around the baby, silently guarding it from harm. They neither barked nor moved away, acting as sentinels through the freezing night.

Resident Sukla Mondal, one of the first to see the baby, recalled the moment of shock: “The dogs weren’t aggressive. They looked alert… as if they knew the child was fighting to live.”

Another resident, Subhash Pal, said he heard a cry around dawn, only to discover the astonishing scene moments later.

Rescue and Medical Care

Once Sukla gently approached, the protective dogs loosened their circle.
She wrapped the newborn in her dupatta and alerted neighbours.

The baby was taken to Maheshganj Hospital and later referred to Krishnanagar Sadar Hospital. Doctors confirmed the infant had no injuries, and the blood on the head was likely from birth.

Police believe the abandonment happened minutes after delivery and suspect someone from the locality may be involved.

Community Reaction

The incident has deeply moved the residents of Nabadwip.
Many expressed disbelief that the stray dogs — usually shooed away — showed such instinctive compassion.

One railway worker remarked: “These same dogs we complain about showed more humanity than the person who abandoned that child.”

Children were later seen offering biscuits to the dogs, now hailed as heroes.

Authorities Take Action

After the dogs rescued the newborn, Nabadwip Police and Child Welfare authorities have started an investigation and initiated legal procedures for the child’s long-term care.

The town, steeped in the compassionate teachings of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, believes this act of protection reflects the spirit of kindness that has long defined its heritage.
